First of all, let’s take a look at how I got here. A few IG accounts were instrumental in turning me to the dark side terracotta side. I mean look at these…

^^This is the home of Jonathan Lefrançois. He is one of my absolute favorites on IG. The terracotta pots against the white wall just tug on my heart strings.

Okay back to…3 reasons to use terracotta for your plants.

Terracotta pots are usually inexpensive! (#thatbudgetlife). You can find basic terracotta pots at most garden centers and plant shops. They are usually the least expensive pot in the store. I’ve found standard terracotta for less than $1 per pot! Now, there are more expensive handmade terracotta pots but if you’re just starting out or have a ton of plants, there’s no shame in being basic!

Terracotta is a type of clay. When baked, it becomes a hard and very porous material. It allows air and moisture to flow through the walls of the pot. This can help to prevent fungal diseases and root rot which lead to fungus gnats and all sorts of stuff you don’t want. Terracotta is perfect for succulents and cacti! It’s also helps to dry out soil in cooler climate conditions.

Terracotta pots come in many different styles. From beautiful Mexican style pottery to floral Tuscan styles. Even modern and freestyle. You’re sure to find a terracotta pot to fit in your home.

This is a fun time lapse video from my IG that shows a very modern style terracotta pot. It’s one of a set of three I received as a Mother’s Day gift from my husband. He’s a keeper! You can find them here.

We got home from camping only to find this poor Philodendron verrucosum?I must have forgotten to water it before leaving and since it’s in a small clay pot, it dries out super fast! After a drink it only took about 2 hours to perk up! • Plant from @pottedelephant? This is one of my favorite pots (with the Oxalis) by one of my favorites, Morgan Doane. She sells her pottery in her Etsy shop . Everything from terracotta pots to Raku! You will LOVE her stuff but you have to get on her email list or else you WILL miss out on her shop updates. These days there are so many different kinds of pots for your plants. I also love this pot. It’s one of my favorite Amazon buys to date. It’s a fat walled pot with a drainage saucer. It comes as a set of 2 and they are just perfect!

  1. I love it! Terracotta is the only way to go for me! As soon as I started using terracotta posts, my plants could finally breathe and the amount of plants suffering from over-watering went down.

  2. I’m just starting out with terra-cotta pots. I noticed they get wet when you water, which makes sense, but how do you best determine when to water next? Or does it depend on the type of plant? Right now I’m only growing pothos and Christmas cactus.

  3. I could use all the advice I can on my plants I like to find pants like the ones you showed I've never tried the pot you showed I usually have plastic but they do have drainage but I'm going to get the ones you showed and try them I have a lot of hanging plants I don't know if they come like that I hope so thank you my name is Darlene my email is westvirginia 304@yahoo.com any advice you can give me will be much appreciated I love my plans that's my hobby I have a lot sometimes I don't even know when to order I just go by and then it leaves turn yellow just need help thank you
