Creating a work-from-home office is a delicate dance between functionality and comfort. But what if you’re also a plant lady?! Check out our Plant Filled Home Office along with tips and our favorite office plants.

I’ve worked from home ever since I left my 9-5 job after the birth of our first child. For a while that looked like me sitting at the dining room table, disheveled, one eye on my computer and one eye on the kids. At one point I remember adding a pen cup next to my computer in the hopes of making it look more like a desk space.

It was time for a change

We decided to transform our spare bedroom into an office space. We had a little push to do this project when a company reached out, and offered to send me some office furniture. It was good timing because we really couldn’t afford to buy new furniture at at the time. And although it’s not particularly my favorite style, it was free and for that, I am grateful!

We decided to give the walls a new coat of paint. We went with white paint and a single green accent wall. I really do love the color we chose but to be honest, I wish we would have done all green or all white. Maybe someday!

We also had new carpet installed, which was a big splurge for this project. We picked a middle of the road carpet, had someone professionally install it, and about $450 later our feet were warm and cozy.

Tips for a plant filled home office

  • Use low maintenance plants that don’t require a lot of care
  • Place plants as close to a window as possible for maximum light exposure
  • Think outside of the “potted plant” by displaying terrariums
  • Hang plants as to not clutter the desk
  • Place potted plants on a tray or plate to not cause water damage
  • Elevate plants with a stack of books
  • Pick one style of posts and stick with it (terracotta, ceramic, etc.)

the plants we used

For this office makeover we used some plants we had on hand, and bought a few to fill in spots. Most of these plants are small, but will definitely grown in time!
