DIY Front Door Makeover

We bought our first house just a little over a year ago.  It’s an early 90’s ranch and that’s exactly what we got.  The amount of oak in this house is enough for anyone to vomit.  It was “move in ready” if you were wearing a white bodysuit and mom jeans with Doc Martens and a plaid shirt around your waist.  It was “move in ready” if you were sitting bug-eyed in front off the TV watching Nirvana Unplugged.  You get it, right?!  SO 90’s!  We knew our updating would be little by little.  We’ve been making small changes here and there.  Slowly our house is making it’s way out of the 90’s.

Anyway, there was a house around the corner that had been flipped and remodeled.  It had a fresh new look on the outside and I loved it!  The color was perfect and now I wanted to paint my house.  We aren’t able to paint the whole thing right now so Tim suggested we just paint the door and maybe that would hold me over until spring.  He was right!  We took that sun bleached teal door and painted it black.  I couldn’t be more happy!  I’m so excited, I can not wait to decorate my porch and new door for Halloween.

You’ll need:

-A water based satin exterior paint in Black (one quart allowed for 4 coats on the outside and 3 on the inside)

-Primer (We didn’t use primer.  Our door was a very light color and we were painting it black)

-A small foam brush

-A 6″ high density foam roller

-Sand paper (small grit)

-Painter’s Tape

-Kick Plate in Bronze

We’re not professionals by any means but I think the door turned out great and we have a few tips.

  1.  Take off hardware and tape off hinges.
  2.   Sand areas that may be uneven.  (Old drips, etc.)
  3.   Use primer (if needed)
  4.   With your foam brush paint all the inset parts first.  It doesn’t have to be perfect.  You’ll do more coats.
  5.   Take the roller and roll the inside panels first then roll the outsides.
  6.   Let dry.
  7. Repeat steps 4-6 as many times as you need.  We did 4 total coats.
  8. Replace hardware and kick plate and you’re done!
