These DIY Stackable Clay Plates are so easy to make. You’ll also find this project to be quite therapeutic. We did this project in week two of our #stayhome efforts during the coronavirus pandemic. We weren’t leaving the house so we needed to find ways to keep our sanity inside the house.

My original plan was to make small bowls for my air plants. You can still make bowls with this same process, but I ended up making a small plate and really liked the way they stacked. The fun part is mixing different colors and stacking them together to make varied sizes to use as displays.

Let’s get started!

I was able to get everything I needed through an amazon order. I’ll link the products below. There’s no right or wrong way to do this project. As you work with the clay, you may find a way that works better for you.

  1. Break off a piece of clay (I used half of a block of clay per plate) and roll into a ball with your palms.
  2. Press your thumb in the middle of the ball and begin to pinch the sides to flatten.
  3. Pinch around the sides to create a lip.
  4. Place the plates on a baking tray with foil or parchment paper.
  5. Bake according to directions and let cool before touching.

Next Steps

I love the idea of stacking the plates together but you can also use them separately. I have air plants on most of mine but I’m also using one as a ring dish, and another one I’m using as a votive plate.
