DIY Pedestal Planter
When KATU Afternoon reached out to have me back for another plant segment, of course I was humbled and honored. But when the producer told me the last segment was such a hit, I got really excited! I was going to do another DIY project, a pedestal planter.
I had done a few projects here and there (I love this one) but I was mostly focusing on plant care when I visited the show. When they told me that the hanging planters segment got a lot of good feedback, I realized I needed to shift a bit, so I decided to showcase an old project that I had done in the past.
Pedestal Planter
These pedestal planters are seriously so cute! The best part about the project is that they all turn out so unique. Each one is different, depending on the combination of bowl and cups you use.
For this project I’m using polypropylene “outdoor dining dinnerware”. You can use other materials for this project like ceramic, or glassware. The biggest thing to note is you will need to change your drill bit and adhesive according to your bowl/cup material. Glass and ceramics can be drilled with a diamond drill bit type, and you can find adhesive for those materials as well. I’ll share the products I used down below.
Supplies Needed for DIY pedestal planter
- Bowls and/or cups
- Sandpaper ( I like the blocks)
- Drill and drill bit (for plastic or polypropylene I used a standard wood bit)
- Adhesive (for plastic or polypropylene I used this adhesive)
- Potting mix (this is my favorite mix)
- Plants
Pedestal Planter Steps
I’d love for you to watch this video on how I made these. It’s a quick 5 minute segment on KATU Afternoon. I’ve also included steps below!
- Decide the look and style you want by choosing 2 bowls/cups. One will be the top of the planter and one will be the pedestal.
- Find the middle of each bowl and drill the hole for drainage. Try to get the hole right in the middle of the bowl.
- Using the sandpaper, lightly sand the areas where the 2 bowls will connect.
- Place adhesive on one bowl and place the other bowl on top. Use books on top to create weight for the adhesive.
- Follow instructions for adhesive setting time. Let dry before planting.
Potting Up A Plant
You can use your favorite plant potting mix or check out my favorite potting mix recipe here.
- Place about 1”- 2” of potting mix in the planter.
- Pull the plant out of the nursery pot and gently remove excess dirt from the roots.
- Place the plant in the planter and fill the rest of the space with more potting mix.
