TOP 5 HOYA PLANTS TO COLLECT
Hoya Carnosa: This popular Hoya features thick, waxy leaves and clusters of star-shaped flowers. The carnosa has different varieties. Some with solid green leaves, and some variegated with white, yellow, and even pink leaves.
Hoya Kerrii: Recognized for its heart-shaped leaves, this Hoya is a favorite (especially around Valentine’s Day). Hoya kerrii is one of the slower growing Hoya, but well worth the wait!
Hoya Pubicalyx: Known for its striking purple-red-black leaves and fragrant flowers, this Hoya is one of the most easy to find. They can be found at plant shops and even hardware stores.
Hoya Linearis: Featuring long, slender leaves, this trailing Hoya is a gorgeous option for a hanging planter.
Hoya Australis: With broad, glossy leaves and sweetly scented flowers, this Hoya comes in green and variegated colors. It’s a climber so attach it to a pole, and watch it grow!
HOYA CARE TIPS
While it is important to “get to know your plant” and try to understand the conditions in your own home, I have found that most of my Hoya plants have the same general care needs.
- Light: Hoya plants generally prefer brighter light, avoiding direct sunlight that can scorch their leaves.
- Watering: Allow the soil to slightly dry between waterings to prevent root rot. Adjust watering frequency based on the plant’s needs and environmental conditions.
- Humidity: Hoyas appreciate higher humidity levels, but they can adapt to average household humidity.
- Potting Mix: Use a well-draining, chunky potting mix to prevent waterlogging.
- Temperature: Maintain a consistent temperature range of 60-80°F (15-27°C).
- Fertilizing: Feed with a balanced, diluted liquid fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season (spring and summer).
- Pruning: Trim leggy growth to encourage bushiness and remove any dead or yellowing leaves.
- Support: Provide trellises or supports for climbing varieties to help them grow vertically.
Remember that individual plant needs may vary, so observe your Hoyas and adjust care accordingly. Regularly check for pests like mealybugs and scale, and address any issues as soon as possible. With proper care, your Hoya plants will thrive and bring beauty (and blooms) to your indoor space.
