Preserved Moss Wreath

Preserved Moss

Preserved moss is real moss or lichen that is farmed or harvested from forests. The moss is dried, and then preserved through a process allowing the moss to be used for a variety of interior plantscaping design projects. This no water/low maintenance medium makes it easy to create a beautifully designed wreath that will last for years to come.

Mosses used in this project

This wreath project uses a combination of local, ethically harvested forest moss from the northwest United States, and preserved lichen, commonly known as reindeer moss. The reindeer moss comes in a variety of colors and is easy to find at craft stores, plant shops, and online suppliers.

Tips

If you desire a particular look, spend some time prior to the glueing step to stage the moss on or around the wreath form.

For a clean, modern look, use scissors to trim the moss around the form, removing stray pieces. For a more organic look, no trimming is necessary!

Most preserved moss has a frontside and a backside. The frontside usually has a more round or pillowy shape, and is more colorful. The backside will sometimes be flat, and oftentimes is brown in color as it is the side that was attached to the ground or bark in nature.

Steps

  1. Plug in the hot glue gun and place a glue stick in the cartridge. Be sure the glue gun is being used as directed and has a surface underneath it that can withstand hot glue. If the glue gun has a temperature option, we suggest using a low temperature.
  2. Lay out the wreath form and preserved moss on a work surface.
  3. Choose your first piece of moss and decide which side is the backside.
  4. Using the glue gun, carefully place glue on the backside of the moss.
  5. Quickly press moss in place on the wreath form and allow glue to dry (approximately 10 seconds).
  6. Continue to glue moss pieces around the form to create your desired look.
  7. Option to trim moss if needed.

Care/Maintenance

The best thing about a preserved moss wreath is the minimal maintenance. There is no watering or particular light conditions required.

You may see a color reduction with preserved moss over time. Preserved moss color will typically last 2-5 years (or more). To maintain the fresh look of your wreath, you can remove faded pieces and glue new pieces in their place.

  1. Very excited to find some guidance on making lichen moss wreaths for two of my close friends this holiday season. What is even more fun is that I personally collected all of my moss from beneath our trees in front of our home in the Willamette Valley this last June. So fun to learn that you live in Portland. Love our Oregon.
