I know some of you will be annoyed or get offended by this post, but that’s probably because you aren’t writing thank you cards.\u00a0 The fact is, with growing technology we are losing the art of\u00a0 handwritten thank you notes.\u00a0 Some people will just shoot you an email or a text to thank you for a gift (and that’s okay) but why not make more effort to show somebody your gratitude?\u00a0 Think about it for just a second.\u00a0 A person goes out, picks out a gift specifically for you, purchases it, wraps it, and delivers it to you for\u00a0your special occasion.\u00a0 All that effort just for YOU!\u00a0 Now, is it too much trouble for you to send a hand written thank you card?\u00a0 No!\u00a0 In fact, it’s just good manners.<\/p>\n

I’ve done my fair share of research on etiquette and not everybody agrees on the details, but the consensus is,\u00a0make the effort to show someone you’re thankful by hand writing a note.<\/em><\/p>\n

Below is my personal guide line.\u00a0 If\u00a0I received a gift from you and never\u00a0sent a thank you card, I’m really sorry (and surprised)!\u00a0 On the other hand, it could have been between 1998-2008.\u00a0 Those\u00a0were some foggy years for me and I’m not sure there was stationary underneath the rock I was under…<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0 \u00a0A handwritten note should be given after receiving any kind of gift.\u00a0 Birthday, graduation, wedding, etc. \u00a0Some experts say if you receive a gift and open it in front of the person, an immediate verbal thank you should suffice.\u00a0 I\u00a0think a card should still be written.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0 Be timely.\u00a0 Send the card as soon as possible.\u00a0 Within 2 weeks for a birthday, graduation, anniversary, etc.\u00a0 Within 3 months for a wedding. (Not sending a thank you for a wedding present is so wrong!)\u00a0\u00a0If you receive flowers or a meal during an illness or birth of a new baby, a thank you should be written as soon as you recover.\u00a0 Or a non-ill family member can write it for you.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0 Mention the gift in the card. \u00a0“Thank you so much for the________.\u00a0 It goes perfectly with my d\u00e9cor!” \u00a0If money is given, you may or may not chose to mention how much (and that’s ok) but you should always say what you are planning to do with the money.\u00a0 “Thank you so much for your generous gift.\u00a0 Oliver needs new clothes so this money was perfect timing.”<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0 Children should always be encouraged by their parents or guardians to write thank you\u00a0cards.\u00a0 Tell them why it’s important.\u00a0 “It makes people feel good”, “They did something nice for us”, “We\u00a0need to show our gratitude”.\u00a0 Have them help by drawing a picture or\u00a0signing their name.<\/p>\n

There are so many different situations where people do things for you or give you gifts.\u00a0 Sometimes it’s ok to email or make a phone call.\u00a0 Here’s what I think…<\/p>\n
