Hello!\u00a0 I’m glad you’re here today.\u00a0 I’m guessing you’re here because you are a beginner gardener?\u00a0 Good!\u00a0 Me too!\u00a0 I’ve been successfully (mostly) growing indoor plants for years.\u00a0 Recently though, I’ve been doing more and more outdoor gardening.\u00a0 This year has been a big year for me.\u00a0 In preparation of\u00a0 being as successful as possible, I’ve been doing a lot of research and taking classes.\u00a0 I’ve learned so much I think my head is going to explode!\u00a0 Today I’m going to show you how to Keep Herbs Growing All Season Long (in a container).\u00a0 No fancy garden lingo here!\u00a0 Just easy step by step instructions.\u00a0 Sound good?!\u00a0 Good!<\/p>\n

I’ll be using Cilantro because well, I just LOVE Cilantro!\u00a0 There’s nothing better than tacos with fresh garden picked Cilantro on top!\u00a0 This method works for other leafy herbs too.\u00a0 Not all herbs can be harvested multiple times like Cilantro but you can still harvest all season with the seeds you sow every few weeks.<\/p>\n

\"How<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

You need:<\/strong><\/p>\n

-A container (at least 12″ deep)<\/p>\n

-Potting Soil (for outdoor use but not garden soil)<\/p>\n

-Fertilizer (optional)<\/p>\n

-Water<\/p>\n

-Seeds<\/p>\n

-Herb start<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Your Container<\/strong><\/p>\n

The container you chose should have drainage and be at least 8″-12″ deep.\u00a0 Make sure your container is not treated with chemicals on the inside.<\/p>\n

Your Soil<\/strong><\/p>\n

We could talk about soil forever.\u00a0 In short, do not use garden soil, it’s too heavy.\u00a0 Use a potting soil.\u00a0 I mix a bit (according to the directions) of organic fertilizer in with the soil.<\/p>\n

Your Herb Start<\/strong><\/p>\n

When purchasing starts make sure they look healthy.\u00a0 Chose a start that is free of bugs and disease.<\/p>\n

Your Seeds<\/strong><\/p>\n

Check expiration dates on your package to make sure they’re not expired.<\/p>\n

\"How<\/p>\n

Let’s get started:<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. \u00a0Fill your container with soil (and fertilizer optional).\u00a0 Fill to 1″-3″ from the top.<\/li>\n
  2. Draw a cross in the soil.\u00a0 You’ll want 4 pie shapes.<\/li>\n
  3. In the first section dig a hole and plant your start.<\/li>\n
  4. In the second section sow seed.<\/li>\n
  5. Wait 2-3 weeks and then sow more seed in section 3<\/li>\n
  6. 2-3 weeks after that you will sow more seed in section 4.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The idea is that you will harvest the cilantro start for the first time about a week after planting (or when it reaches about 6″ long).\u00a0 In the meantime, the first sown seeds (section #2) will begin to grow.\u00a0 About that same time, you will be sowing seed in section #3 and so on…<\/p>\n

    My last cilantro plant grew back two times.\u00a0 They can grow back 1-4 times depending on how often you harvest.\u00a0 The more you harvest, the more times it will grow back!\u00a0 Once the cilantro has flowered you will not want to harvest it anymore.\u00a0 You can let it continue to flower and produce seed.\u00a0 The seed is coriander and can be crushed\/used in cooking as well.\u00a0 Bonus!<\/p>\n

    Harvesting<\/strong><\/p>\n

    You are basically giving your cilantro a hair cut.\u00a0 With clean sharp scissors cut cilantro about one inch from the soil line.\u00a0 I always leave a few leaves on the plant ( I’m not sure why, I read it somewhere so I just do it.\u00a0 ha!)\u00a0 The top inch or so it what you will use to cook with.\u00a0 I usually harvest about once every 7-10 days.\u00a0 Cilantro and other herbs can be dried or frozen if you find yourself with too much at once.<\/p>\n

    \"How<\/p>\n

    That’s pretty much it!\u00a0 Super simple, right?\u00a0 Some herbs will grow faster than others and everything depends on climate\/sun\/water…If you find that your seed is taking a while to grow, you can sow seed in your next section 1-2 weeks apart instead of 3 weeks.\u00a0 Keep going around that circle, sowing seed as many times as you can!\u00a0 Some herbs will do well indoors year round so you can do this same method indoors too!<\/p>\n
