The kitchen is often overlooked when it comes to houseplants, but it can be one of the best places to show off beautiful foliage. Whether you have a sunny windowsill or a cozy corner in need of a little love, there’s a plant that will thrive in your space.

We recently remodeled our kitchen, a project that’s been over a decade in the making! I started my Pinterest inspiration board more than 10 years ago, and after years of planning and saving, we finally made it happen. We tackled most of the work ourselves (with a little help from friends), and we couldn’t be happier with how it turned out. There are still a few finishing touches to go, like lighting and hardware but we DID it! If you’re curious about the transformation, check out my highlight on Instagram.

Everyone has their favorite types of plants, but if you’re looking to add a touch of greenery to your kitchen and aren’t sure where to start, I’m excited to share some of my favorite kitchen-friendly plants with you today.

Pothos Plants

Pothos is an all-time favorite for a reason. This trailing vine is both forgiving and adaptable, making it ideal for beginners or busy plant parents. Its heart-shaped leaves can be solid green or variegated with white, yellow, or even neon hues. Pothos can hang in your kitchen or sit atop the kitchen cabinets for a lush jungle aesthetic.

Care Tips:

Light: Thrives in bright, indirect light but tolerates low light.

Water: Pothos will let you know when they’re thirsty! Curled leaves indicated that it’s time to water. But to prevent the plant getting too thirsty, you should probably water when the soil starts to feels dry. Avoid overwatering.

Bonus: It’s easy to propagate in water—perfect for sharing cuttings!

Hoya Plants

Do you follow me on Instagram? If you do, it’s no secret that Hoyas are my favorite plant. I currently have about 50 varieties and I’m always trying to get my hands on more! I love them because they really have so much character, structure, and they are stunning when they bloom.

If you want help with general Hoya care, head over to THIS blog post of mine. For today, let’s talk about getting Hoya to bloom!

From my experience, some Hoya varieties bloom more readily than others, but two key factors stand out. Most of the Hoyas in my home begin flowering about 1 to 3 years after I bring them in, meaning they are typically around that age when they start to bloom. Maturity plays a significant role, so patience is essential—your Hoya may simply need more time to develop before it produces flowers.

How to Get Your Hoya Plant to Bloom

Hoya plants, also known as wax plants, are prized for their thick, waxy leaves and stunning, fragrant flowers. However, getting a Hoya to bloom can sometimes be a challenge. If you’ve been caring for your plant and still haven’t seen flowers, don’t worry—Hoyas have specific needs when it comes to blooming. Here’s a complete guide to help your Hoya thrive and reward you with beautiful clusters of star-shaped flowers.

Provide the Right Amount of Sunlight

Sunlight is one of the most important factors for encouraging blooms. Hoyas prefer bright, indirect light, but many varieties also thrive with some direct sun. If your plant isn’t blooming, consider increasing its light exposure.

Best Placement: Near a west- or south-facing window where it receives bright, filtered sunlight.

Supplemental Lighting: If you don’t have enough natural light, use a grow light to provide the necessary intensity.

Avoid Harsh Direct Sun: Prolonged exposure to intense afternoon sun can scorch the leaves, so be mindful of too much direct light. A dark purple leaf can indicate too much sun.

Choose the Right Fertilizer

Feeding your Hoya plant properly can significantly impact its blooming potential.

Use a Balanced Fertilizer: A balanced liquid fertilizer (such as 10-10-10) works well, but a phosphorus-rich formula (like 5-10-5) can help encourage flowering.

Fertilizing Schedule: Feed your Hoya, as directed, during the growing season (spring and summer) and reduce feeding in fall and winter when growth slows.

Keep the Right Temperature and Humidity

Hoyas are tropical plants, so they thrive in warm and humid conditions.

Optimal Temperature: Keep your plant in temperatures between 60-80°F (16-27°C). Cooler temperatures can slow growth and blooming.

Watering: Less Is More

Hoyas prefer to dry out slightly between waterings. Overwatering can lead to root rot, which prevents blooming.

Check Soil Moisture: Water only when the top 1-2 inches of soil feel dry.

Use Well-Draining Soil: A mix of potting soil, perlite, and orchid bark ensures proper drainage.

Reduce Watering in Winter: Hoyas need less water in cooler months when growth slows.

Pruning and Supporting Your Hoya

Encouraging blooms also involves proper plant care beyond watering and feeding.

Don’t Remove Old Flower Spikes: Hoyas bloom from the same spurs year after year, so avoid cutting them off.

Prune for Shape: Trim leggy growth to promote fuller foliage and better flowering.

Use a Trellis: Since Hoyas are vining plants, providing a support structure helps them grow strong and encourages blooming.

Stress Can Encourage Blooms

Mild stress can sometimes trigger blooming.

Slightly Root-Bound Plants Bloom More: Avoid repotting too frequently. Hoyas often bloom better when they are slightly root-bound.

Adjust Watering and Temperature: A slight drop in nighttime temperatures or letting the soil dry out a bit more than usual can sometimes push the plant to bloom.

Blooms: The Reward

Getting your Hoya plant to bloom requires patience and proper care. By ensuring it receives the right light, fertilizer, humidity, and occasional mild stress, you can encourage it to produce its signature fragrant flowers.
Gardening enthusiasts often focus on selecting the right soil, fertilizers, and watering schedules, but one crucial step that often gets overlooked is washing plant pots. Whether you are repotting plants, reusing old containers, or preparing for a new gardening season, cleaning plant pots is essential for maintaining plant health. Unwashed pots can harbor pests, diseases, and mold, which can lead to unhealthy plants and poor growth. In this blog post, we will explore why washing plant pots is important, how to do it effectively, and how this simple practice can enhance your gardening success.

Why Washing Plant Pots Is Essential

Many gardeners assume that a quick rinse is enough when reusing old plant pots. However, dirt, bacteria, and pests can linger in crevices, leading to potential problems for new plants. Here are some key reasons why washing plant pots is an essential gardening habit:

1. Prevents Disease Spread

Old plant pots may contain remnants of soil from previous plants, which can carry fungal spores, bacteria, and viruses. These pathogens can infect new plants, causing diseases such as root rot, and powdery mildew. By thoroughly cleaning pots before reuse, you reduce the risk of spreading harmful diseases.

2. Eliminates Pest Eggs and Larvae

Pests like spider mites, aphids, and fungus gnats often lay eggs in the soil or on the inner surfaces of plant pots. If pots are not washed properly, these pests can hatch and infest new plants. A thorough cleaning helps remove any lingering eggs or larvae, preventing future infestations.

3. Prevents Mold and Other Buildup

Moist environments create the perfect breeding ground for mold, moss, and other buildups. If left uncleaned, plant pots can develop a slimy film that not only looks unsightly but can also impact plant health. Cleaning pots ensures that excess organic material and moisture-loving fungi are removed.

4. Promotes Better Drainage and Aeration

Dirt and debris can clog drainage holes, leading to water retention issues that cause root rot. By washing pots regularly, you help maintain proper aeration and drainage, ensuring that plants receive the oxygen and moisture balance they need for optimal growth.

How to Wash Plant Pots the Best Way

Cleaning plant pots doesn’t have to be complicated. Follow these steps to ensure that your pots are thoroughly sanitized and ready for new plants:

Supplies

Step 1: Remove Excess Soil and Debris

Start by emptying any remaining soil from the pot. Use a stiff brush or an old toothbrush to scrub away dried dirt, roots, and other residues. If soil is caked onto the pot, soak it in water for a few minutes to loosen the debris.

Step 2: Wash with Soap and Water

Fill a bucket or the sink with warm water and add a few drops of mild dish or Castile soap . Using a sponge or brush, scrub the pot inside and out. Make sure to clean all crevices where pests and pathogens could hide.

Step 3: Disinfect the Pots

To kill any lingering bacteria, fungi, or pest eggs, soak the pots in a disinfecting solution. One effective method is to use a 10% bleach solution (one part bleach to nine parts water). Submerge the pots for 10-15 minutes, then rinse thoroughly with clean water. Alternatively, you can use a solution of white vinegar and water for a more natural disinfectant.

Step 4: Rinse and Dry Completely

After disinfecting, rinse the pots thoroughly to remove any soap or bleach residue. Allow them to air dry completely before using them again. Drying in direct sunlight can help eliminate any remaining bacteria.

Washing plant pots is a simple yet essential step that contributes to healthy plant growth and a thriving indoor garden. By preventing disease, eliminating pests, and maintaining proper aeration, you set the stage for healthy and flourishing plants. Whether you’re a seasoned gardener or just starting out, making plant pot cleaning a regular practice will help protect your plants. With a little effort, you can ensure that each plant gets the fresh, clean start it deserves.

Understanding Your Plant’s Water Needs

Each plant has unique watering needs based on factors such as:

Plant Type – Some plants, like succulents and cacti, require infrequent watering, while tropical plants need more.

Size of the Plant and Pot – Larger plants and pots hold more soil and moisture, while smaller plants dry out faster.

Season and Climate – Most plants need more water during warm months (active growing times) and less during colder seasons.

Humidity Levels – If your home is dry, your plants may need more frequent watering, while high humidity can reduce the need for frequent watering.

The Best Watering Techniques

You’re going to find lots of different people with thoughts on a variety of different watering techniques. But, if you ask me, the classic top watering is the best! I’ve tried all the techniques from bottom watering to water pulling, and nothing is as easy and straight forward as watering into the potting mix.

There are a few different option for top watering, depending on the size of the plant (and whether you can move the plant or not). For plants that are hard to move, you can use a watering can, making sure there is a drip tray to catch the water. If you can move the plants, putting them in a sink or the bathtub can be a great option, as you’re not only watering, but rinsing the leaves to clean as well. To ensure your houseplants are properly watered, follow these best practices:

1. Check the Soil Before Watering

One of the easiest ways to determine if your plant needs water is by checking the potting mix:

Stick your finger about one to two inches into the soil. If it feels dry, it’s time to water.

If the soil still feels moist, wait a few more days before checking again.

Use can also use a moisture meter for a more precise reading. I like this one from a small female owned business (selling on Amazon).

2. Water Thoroughly but Not Excessively

When watering your plants, be sure to do so thoroughly, allowing water to soak into the potting mix and reach the roots. However, avoid overwatering, as this can lead to root rot. A good rule of thumb is:

Water all around the surface of the potting mix.

Water until you see excess water draining from the bottom of the pot.

Always use pots with drainage holes to prevent standing water.

If water runs straight through and out the drainage hole quickly, your plant may need a deeper soak.

3. Use the Right Type of Water

While tap water works fine for many plants, some are sensitive to chemicals like chlorine and fluoride. Here are some alternative water options:

Filtered or distilled water – Ideal for sensitive plants like spider plants and calatheas.

Rainwater – A natural, mineral-rich option that plants love.

Let tap water sit out for 24 hours to allow chlorine to evaporate before watering.

4. Water at the Right Time of Day

The best time to water houseplants is in the morning. This gives plants time to absorb moisture before the temperature rises, reducing the risk of mold or fungal growth overnight.

5. Adjust Watering Based on the Season

Spring and Summer: Plants are actively growing and need more frequent watering.

Fall and Winter: Growth slows down, so plants need less water. Overwatering during this period is a common mistake.

Common Watering Mistakes to Avoid

Many plant parents struggle with either overwatering or underwatering their plants. Here are some signs of each:

Signs of Overwatering:

Yellowing leaves

Mushy, black, or brown roots

Fungus gnats around the soil

Wilting despite wet soil

Signs of Underwatering:

Dry, crispy leaves

Soil pulling away from the pot’s edges

Wilting due to dehydration

The Bottom Line

Watering your houseplants the right way is all about balance. By understanding your plant’s needs, checking the soil regularly, and avoiding common mistakes, you can keep your indoor jungle thriving. Remember, when in doubt, it’s better to underwater than overwater, as you can always add more moisture but can’t take it away once the roots are too saturated.

Now that you’re equipped with the best watering techniques, your plants will thank you with healthy growth and vibrant leaves!
